How I approach writing and editing:

I like breaking down complicated-sounding concepts or ideas into relatable stories by using parallels.

When the fuel prices went up in India recently, The Ken and Finshots popular Indian finance newsletters) wrote articles about the taxes the government charged on basic fuel cost which made it costly.

A good way I thought to explain this was, “Think about the surcharges like a pocket money account or piggy bank that the government can dip into at any time.” When their spending goes up, they want more pocket money, so the govt increases taxes on fuels.

Let's move to crypto currencies. Everyone talks about it and very few know what they’re talking about. People use the words bitcoin, crypto currency and blockchain interchangeably. This is the same as using the printing press, the US Dollar and other currencies interchangeably. If this could be explained to someone from my mother’s generation, you’ve got it right.

Think of blockchain as a printing press. A printing press is used to print a lot of stuff - labels, leaflets, books, posters, banners, newspapers. None of this has anything to do with printing any currency (or USD).

So blockchain is a platform, pretty much like the internet. It is not a technology.

One of the uses it has been put to is to create various cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin is the name of one of those currencies. So like we have the Rupee, Dollar, Franc, Euro as currencies, we have crypto currencies and Bitcoin is one of the cryptocurrency.

The blockchain platform is an exciting technology and a game-changer. It can change our lives the way the printing press or the internet did. So, at best a cryptocurrency is like that plastic round token that you buy (by paying for it with USD or with INR) when you enter a carnival fair and you use that token to buy various snacks, drinks or rides.

Whoever can be made to understand crypto concepts in non-technical and jargon-free terms is more informed to consider them even before thinking if it’s worth investing. Also think about this, we do not put our hard-earned money into something that we don’t understand and is beyond us.
